FEAR OF FLYING
WHAT IS A FEAR OF FLYING?
Paralysing, crippling, frustrating, terrifying, embarrassing…these are some of the adjectives we can use when talking about a fear of flying.
This is a common condition that affects up to 20% of the population. Some people find certain parts of the flight stressful or uncomfortable. Some people find the mere thought of an aircraft nauseating or panic inducing. In any case, the event of getting to the airport, checking in, boarding the plane, taking-off, manoeuvres in flight, landing or even getting off a plane can create a feeling of panic, discomfort or deep anxiety.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Typical signs and symptoms will include:
Increased sweating
Rapid, shallow breathing
Irritability
Pessimistic/catastrophic thoughts
Anxiety/stress
Irrational behaviour
Some sufferers may experience a full blown panic attack meaning that they are simply unable to fly at all. This can mean no holidays abroad, not being able to see family members or friends living abroad, not taking up work that requires travelling overseas etc.
Although it is widely known that air travel is the safest form of transport people with a fear of flying find no comfort in this. Consciously they can understand everything to do with flight and in fact, probably know more about flight than most frequent flyers! However, there is something deep down, something that they cannot even put a finger on, that is stopping them from getting on that plane or even thinking about flight.
