SHY BLADDER

WHAT IS SHY BLADDER?

Shy Bladder is a condition where someone cannot urinate if they are near or believe to be near people who can see or hear them urinate.

Some sufferers may only find it difficult to urinate when there is someone else standing right next to them. Others may even find it difficult to leave the house as this is the only place they can urinate without intrusion.

IS IT COMMON?

Shy bladder is a common problem in both men and women but tends to display more in males perhaps due to more social or crowded toilets. Figures show that at least 7% of the population are affected in some way, shape or form. It can occur at any time in life and for many reasons and can often cause not only discomfort but also embarrassment to the sufferer. Many sufferers find that their symptoms only appear in times of heightened stress and anxiety or during busy spells at work and in their social lives.

WHAT CAUSES SHY BLADDER?

Shy bladder can be caused by a number of different factors:

Underlying anxiety or stress
Social Phobia
A fear of being judged or criticised
‘Stage Fright’ or on the spot performance anxiety (giving a urine sample)
The belief that toilets, especially public toilets, are dirty and/or unsafe…

Shy bladder is also known as; Paruresis, Urophobia, Bashful Bladder, Psychogenic Urinary Retention or Shy Cock.
